Years Playing Flute: 1
Favorite Piece of Music: Hedwig’s Theme from Harry Potter
Dexton Bushman might be the studio’s youngest member, but don’t let that fool you: He’s full of talent, passion, and determination, and has the potential to be one of our best! He’s been playing for a little over a year, and he already knows the fingerings of more than 20 notes. Lessons with Dexton are always really fun because we play music from his Harry Potter and Star Wars books (also favorites of mine), and because his enthusiasm is so contagious! Sometimes he surprises me with his killer impersonations of the characters from Harry Potter. Next time you see him, definitely ask him to do the characters Severus Snape and Hermione Granger.
Dexton is our first Featured Flutist because he earned the Colorful Clef’s very first On-the-Spot Award for Awesome Attitude! Dexton has been a quick, note-naming ninja for a while now, but in his last lesson he was experiencing how mistakes can make us feel disappointed in ourselves, especially when we are trying to do something difficult (like beginning to read notes without the names written underneath). But here is what’s great about Dexton: Instead of giving up, he decided to astonish me with his positive attitude and determination! Dexton decided to give the task 100% of his effort, and I think he even surprised himself with how quickly he read the notes! One shift in thinking from “this is too hard,” to “I’m going to try my best even if I make mistakes” led Dexton to realize that he doesn’t actually need those note names underneath anymore!
Any of us who remember our early days of learning to read music know that reading note names is one of the hardest obstacles to overcome in music. It really is like learning a new language. I applaud Dexton for his bravery in trying something new and uncomfortable, and for his healthy attitude towards musical challenges. Keep up the great work, Dexton! You inspire us all, and congratulations on your On-the-Spot Award!
