Featured Flutist: Payton Bambling

Name: Payton Bambling

Has been playing the flute for: 6 years

Favorite thing about the flute: Performing music I have learned in concerts. I also enjoy playing songs from movies and musicals, like Disney, Star Wars, and Harry Potter.

Favorite Harry Potter Character: Hermione Granger or Luna Lovegood

If her life was a musical, it would be called: Awkward…? The Musical

Payton is an easygoing but driven high school senior who has been taking lessons at the Colorful Clef Studio for about a year. She is our current featured student because of an awesome achievement…

She was accepted into the NAU flute studio!! Congratulations, Payton!2018-03-18 13.07.40

Payton has not yet decided if she will be majoring in Criminal Justice or Elementary Education, but she is certain she will minor in flute! Getting accepted into a college flute studio is no easy task. There are a lot of flutists, but very few spots available in studios. To become a flute minor, Payton had to learn 3 different pieces of music and perform them in her audition for the NAU flute professor, Emily McKay. She learned 3 challenging pieces: Andante et Scherzo by Louis Ganne, and the first movements from Mozart’s Concerto in G Major and Hindemith’s Sonata for Flute and Piano.

Now that she has been accepted into a music program, here is Payton’s advice for anyone auditioning: “Just relax and don’t stress. Make sure you have a love for music and enjoy the pieces you are playing.” Wise advice, but that makes sense because Payton is a Ravenclaw! It takes a lot of time and practice to earn a spot in a collegiate flute studio, but it becomes a lot easier if you enjoy the music you are playing.

I’m so proud of Payton, because she works diligently towards her goals, and has shown great improvement in her flute lessons. We wish her the best of luck in college and know she has a bright future ahead!

P.S. Come hear Payton perform with her high school band in the free Music Under the Stars event at the Tempe Center for the Arts on Friday, April 27 at 7:00 pm!
